Support HUB In August

Sunday, August 23

Wow, how grocery prices have soared. We all know the impact this has had on our own budgets. Now imagine high school students trying to get through their days with not enough food. Their bodies are going through growth spurts, puberty, and a myriad of changes. They are striving to learn. Some play sports, participate in the arts, and take part in other active adventures. For many, they are just trying to get through their days as their families struggle to make it financially. At Kent Meridian High School, all students are eligible to receive free breakfast and lunch because many families do not make enough money to afford what it takes to feed their children. At Kent Meridian High School, there is a food and personal hygiene program to help the students and their families called "HUB." We at Kent United Methodist Church are the program's biggest supporter.

HUB is a program created by teachers at the school whose hearts couldn't accept seeing students go without their basic needs being met. The program provides the resources for students to pick up snacks, meal components, and personal hygiene items such as shampoo, deodorant, and laundry detergent. Every month, KUMC delivers a load of food and personal hygiene items. This all happens because of the generous financial donations of our congregation and a few groups associated with our church members who join our efforts. While the program receives some donations from other organizations, they primarily rely on our church, as funding from others has substantially decreased since COVID.

On Sunday, August 23, we ask you to donate to HUB. This is our once-a-year effort to raise enough money to fund this mission for the entire year. You can submit donations via KUMC's online portal or by check. Please write “HUB” on the donation. Or, if you prefer to donate by cash, we will accept that at church on the 23rd. Donations are always accepted throughout the year, as well.

In the last year, we have generously provided $700 worth of support each month, and this is amazing. This used to fill an SUV. With increased prices, however, we have a lot of empty space in the car now. Will you help us reach a stretch goal of providing $1,00 worth of supplies monthly? We hope you will join us in this critical mission.

Thank you so much!! Our students are constantly grateful for the ability to access a food pantry in their school. I was able to get all the items set up in our pantry. Take a look at the attached pictures!

How you can help:

  • Donate money to KUMC Outreach Committee, which will be used to purchase items for K-M HUB. Donate online using the KUMC app or our website at Give Now to Kent United Methodist Church (pushpay.com) by selecting Community Outreach Offering in the drop-down list and noting “Kent HUB” in the Notes field. You can also mail a check to KUMC with Kent HUB in the Memo line.

  • Pray for the students and HUB volunteers that their burdens be eased and their spirits be comforted.
